JOBWORKS Employment Education Programs Inc. ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOL (Hereinafter called “Jobworks Alternative High School”) ATTENDANCE POLICY Policy Jobworks Alternative High School believes that regular attendance and punctuality are crucial to the educational and social development of students. Studies show a strong correlation between good attendance and success in school. In efforts to promote regular attendance and punctuality to foster success, the Jobworks Alternative High School Attendance Policy dictates the following:  Students may not exceed 5 unexcused absences per module  Missing 1 class is equal to 1 unexcused absence. Missing a whole day is equal to 2 unexcused absences, as students have two classes per day  Being asked to leave class by a staff member for behavioral issues at any point during the class will result in an unexcused absence. Students will be given direction as to when they can return. If another class is missed before permission to return is granted, unexcused absences will continue to accumulate  Unexcused absences accumulate during a suspension  An unexcused absence will be issued for any absences that have not been reported by parents/guardians  Calls excusing students will only be accepted by parents/guardians before 9:00 a.m. for morning classes or 12:30 p.m. for afternoon classes. Students will receive an unexcused absence if they are not called in before the start of class  Only parents/guardians can excuse a student regardless of age  At the time a 5th unexcused absence is acquired, a student will be asked to leave the program for the remainder of the module. Course work completed in core subject areas may be retained for possible credit in the future if the student is accepted back into the program. The student will be eligible to interview for the next module. If the program is full to capacity, the student will be eligible to interview and if accepted, will have to wait until space is available. Re-admission into the program is not guaranteed. In the situation that the program is full to capacity, consideration for re-entry directly into the next module will only be given to those who have never received verbal or written warning from Jobworks Alternative High School regarding absenteeism and/or inappropriate behavior in the past  After accumulating 10 excused absences, students will require a doctor’s note in order to miss any more classes. A doctor’s note must correspond with the date of the absence(s) and such documentation must be submitted on the first day the student returns to class. Staff will not accept doctor notes that are back dated  An individualized attendance plan may be discussed if a request is made by parents/guardians in advance and/or such a plan is deemed necessary by staff  Showing up late to classes 4 times will equate to 1 unexcused absence  Students are marked late between 9:01 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. or between 12:30 p.m. – 12:35 p.m. Arriving to class after 10:00 a.m. or 12:35 p.m. is an unexcused absence. Parents/guardians will be notified if a student is sent home Jobworks Alternative High School supports the collaboration with parents/guardians and other community organizations to encourage students to attend and be punctual on a regular basis. Guidelines To support our attendance policy Jobworks Alternative High School will:  Follow discipline protocols to address attendance infractions  Develop individual attendance plans when necessary  Refer to outside agencies for support and information  Work with parents/guardians  Use good judgment when dealing with incidences related to attendance. Staff has the right, under the Manitoba Public School’s Act, to act as a wise and judicious parent and will ensure that all students are provided equal opportunity to learn in a safe and non-threatening environment Procedures The Jobworks Alternative High School Attendance Policy promotes regular attendance and punctuality.
